FILM NOTES

The short film features the second movement from The Mulholland Suite: The Owens Valley. Mulholland died in 1935, and has come back to earth, drawn by the composer's music being written about his life. The year is 2025.  Mulholland watches the composer work with a concert pianist in preparation for a performance in a matter of days. Mulholland listens and reflects back on his life. He sees images of key figures: Friend and mentor Fred Eaton, city booster and owner of the LA Times Harry Chandler, and pictures of himself as Chief of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.  He gazes upon old postcards of his Mulholland Dam in Hollywood,  his post-humous Mulholland Memorial Fountain near Griffith Park. He browses old photos of the beautiful Owens Valley landscapes, its once pastoral farm life.  He relives the excitement of his discovery of the abundance of water in Owens Valley that could be taken for the people of Los Angeles.

At the bottom of Mulholland's memories he confronts the people whose life clocks were cut short by tragedy, a tragedy that he publicly took full responsibility.  Saddled with guilt, shame, and sadness he went to his grave. But this time around, he's  going to face these events anew.  With aid of the composer Colin Sprigg at his side, maybe he, and the people of Los Angeles, may never see things the same again.
