The Mulholland suite for orchestra movement 2: The owens Valley
Composer's music notes
The Owens Valley is the second movement of The Mulholland Suite. This movement is a piano concerto. The music portrays Mulholland with friend and former mayor of LA, Fred Eaton. It's 1904, and they journey by horse and buckboard from LA to the Owens Valley in a quiet quest for water for Los Angeles. They find the beautiful, sparse, and infinite desert valley, towered by snow capped mountains, and a sparkling river of water that bisects the barren valley terrain. The music portrays the Owen's sparse beauty, the majesty of the landscapes, the sparkling waters, the existing pastoral farm life, and foreshadows the future for the people of the Owens Valley.
The Mulholland suite for orchestra movement 8: The blood of the soil
The Blood of the Soil is the final movement of The Mulholland Suite. This piece is akin to the end title of a movie, reflective of Mulholland's life, his unbelievable victories, and unthinkable defeats, its all wrapped up in this piece. Sad and sweet are the words I wrote at the top of the score for the musicians to emote as they play.
